Welcome to the English Department
KS3
At KS3, students will have four lessons of English per week. A variety of work is taught with a focus on developing skills in Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening. Students will study a novel, poetry, a variety of non-fiction writing and media. The units of work covered are laid out in our long-term plans. We aim to make our lessons fun and interactive and we welcome any feedback from both parents and students. Homework will focus on developing reading and spelling skills. It will be set weekly and a timetable is published for each class so that they know when to expect homework.
KS3 Assessment
Students will be continuously assessed in all their English lessons and feedback will be both written and oral. They will complete weekly assessments that will be marked by their teacher. Targets will then be set to help each individual improve. Students will regularly reflect on their performance and ways to improve as well as partaking in peer assessment.
KS4
At KS4, students all follow the AQA GCSE English Language and AQA GCSE English Literature Specification. Students are taught in a carousel, meaning that they are taught by a different teacher each half term. This allows us to ensure that specialists in each area deliver the Controlled Assessments.
KS4 Assessment
Please be aware that every half term in Year 10, students will complete a Controlled Assessment that will form part of their final GCSE grade.
