All students in Key Stage 3 study a Modern Foreign Language (French, with a small number opting for German). At Key Stage 4 a Modern Foreign Language is currently optional, but will be an essential requirement of the English Baccalaureat Pathway for those students currently in Year 9 who intend to progress to Higher Education.

Students are taught to develop their language across the four key skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. At Key Stage 3 students follow the Métro textbook (published by Pearson). Assessments take place at the end of each module (half-termly). At Key Stage 4 students are entered for the AQA GCSE with assessment based on controlled assessments for Speaking and Writing and examinations in Listening and Reading. Homework for all year groups is set weekly.

Students are encouraged to support their learning by making use of online resources at home. The school subscribes to two websites which are suitable for all year groups.

www.linguascope.com (log-in required)

www.atantot.com (log-in required)

www.languagesonline.org.uk (no log-in needed) is a valuable source of exercises to practise grammar structures)

For GCSE students the BBC Bitesize website is a good source of sample exam questions and example answers.
