Mr D Ferris

As a department we are very inclusive and try to offer activities that will appeal to all our pupils, be it the traditional team games or more modern sports such as Parquo and Street Surfing. Our standards and expectations are very high and students are encouraged to take part in an excitingly wide range of activities that are delivered in curriculum time and in our extensive extra curricular schedule. This in addition is supported by our intra and inter school competitions programme in a variety of sports and activities.

Key Stage 3 (3 sessions a week)

In Key Stage 3, all students follow a course including Games, Gymnastic, Athletic and Aesthetic Activities. Our intention is to develop physical skills, mental agility and problem solving, leadership and group cooperation and an understanding of the body and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. In addition to completing the assessment areas for Key Stage 3 they also start to work on aspects of Sport Education such as organising, coaching, reporting, officiating and collecting data.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 there are 3 routes of PE on offer to all students. Our aim is to guide students onto the pathway that is right for them as individuals.

CORE PE (3 sessions a week)

This PE course is purely practical in nature and has no external assessment. Students will follow a programme of activities including team and individual sports, outdoor and adventurous activities and recreational activities. The aim of the course is to develop physically active participants who can make informed choices about lifelong physical activity.

Throughout the course students will continue to develop:

  • Knowledge and understanding of physical activities
  • Effective decision making in a range of different situations
  • Physical fitness
  • Ability to assess situations
  • The ability to make an informed choice about an appropriate and healthy lifestyle
  • Evaluating and improving performance
  • Social and personal skills when working alone or in groups

GCSE PE (additional 3 sessions a week)

The new PE specification provides an exciting opportunity for the student with a keen interest in sport to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Students will be encouraged to improve their own practical performance combined with developing an understanding of important roles associated within sport. These roles range from that of the performer to the organiser, leader, coach, choreographer to the official controlling the activity (referee, umpire, judge). The course will equip students with the knowledge and confidence to make informed lifestyle decisions!

The course is run by EDEXCEL exam board;

  • Six practical areas will be available including; games, gymnastic activities, dance activities, athletics, outdoor & adventurous and performing fitness activities. This component is worth 50% of the total mark and will involve four assessments from at least two activities as a player/performer and there is also the opportunity to be assessed in different roles, such as an umpire or coach.
  • The theoretical component of the course will cover; anatomy and physiology, health and fitness for a healthy lifestyle, training, diet, school influences, cultural and social factors, opportunities for participation, vocational opportunities, the media, sponsorship, various competition levels, and safety in sport. This will be assessed by a written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes worth 40% of the total mark and will involve multiple choice, short answer questions and extended writing questions.
  • Coursework; The Personal Exercise Programme (PEP) is completed within school time and along with an interview makes up the last 10% of the total mark. This piece of work is based on the two years of theory work and is completed in the final quarter of the course.

Btec Level 2 (additional 3 sessions a week)

The BTEC level 2 provides an opportunity for those students who may not be as practically gifted to still attain a PE qualification, or for those who do not go in for the so called “mainstream” sports. They can illustrate their sporting passion by completing structured coursework rather than sitting a final examination. This coursework is assessed in a variety of media including presentations, posters, portfolios and verbal discussion.

The BTEC allows students to gain qualifications equivalent to four ‘A* - C' GCSE's. It also gives the opportunity to gain coaching and leading qualifications in different sporting activities.

This course is run by the EDEXCEL exam board.

  • To gain the BTEC Level 2 you must complete six units. These tasks when completed are graded and then become points which contribute to the grade awarded.
  • The great advantage of the BTEC assessment system is that it allows a far greater degree of flexibility for providing the necessary evidence of your progress and understanding.
